Silica exists in the free state in crystalline or amorphous form and in the combined state as silicates. In the natural state, crystalline silica is present in many rocks that make up the earth’s crust. As a result, crystalline silica is present in many products such as brick, mortar, paving stone, concrete, rock, granite and sand.
Work that may expose workers to crystalline silica dust inhalation is found in most manufacturing and construction industries. However, the health effects of this mineral can be particularly severe and cause disabling diseases such as silicosis and lung cancer. Workers should therefore be adequately trained on the risks and protective measures associated with this contaminant, as well as reducing occupational exposures to crystalline silica to the lowest possible level.
